As an interim supply chain manager I have seen the various forecasting, demand management and planning processes of many companies. These range from those businesses which have very little if any forecasting and planning through to those which have well established processes, of supported by complex and expensive systems.

In the main this will correlate with the size of the business - but not always. I know of at least one multi-billion dollar, multi-national business which has virtually no processes for the above and as a result has at best rudimentary S&OP or other business management processes.

One prerequisite for a good quality S&OP or IBP process is a sales forecast leading to a capacity plan and also to a financial forecast. And yet the number of businesses that do not seriously apply any effort to sales forecasting appears to be huge.

Is this because they don't understand the process or because they are put off by the apparent complexity and expense of it?
